The correct choice of drug and alcohol treatment is a life altering and (more often than not) a life saving choice. Here are some of our suggestions at Narconon Arrowhead for what to look for in drug and alcohol treatment regardless of whether you choose Narconon Arrowhead or not. First, find a program that is drug free including withdrawal (except when medically needed). Handling addiction with more drugs just doesn’t make good sense. Second find a program that offers full detoxification in addition to withdrawal only. Stored drugs and toxins can account for cravings and relapse months or even years after last use. Third in our list of most important drug and alcohol treatment needs is a treatment that fully addresses guilt and depression which almost always accompany drug or alcohol addiction, and in fact can be major factors that led up to the drug or alcohol abuse to begin with. These are of course not a complete list, but are starting points when exploring various treatment options.

Drug and alcohol treatment need not only occur when addiction or alcoholism has set in. Competent drug and alcohol treatment centers realize that treatment of drug abuse can be just as effective, if not more so, than treatment of addiction. One need not have lost everything in order to seek help with a drug or alcohol problem. Drug and alcohol abuse inevitably lead to addiction and alcoholism if allowed to continue unchecked. Once drug addiction or alcoholism is reached there are only three possible endings to the story – jail, death, or sobriety. At Narconon Arrowhead drug detox is a multi-step process. First of course is actual cessation of drug or alcohol use. Alcohol abuse treatment is similar to the treatment required for full blown alcoholism. Medical withdrawal may or may not be indicated, and needs to be assessed by competent medical professionals, as unsupervised, these can be life threatening. Cravings, guilt, and depression are the three factors causing and then continuing alcohol abuse or alcoholism. Any treatment aiming at an alcohol free lifestyle cannot hope to effect lasting change without fully addressing these three points. The only real difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the severity of use, both have use patterns that are to a greater or lesser degree out of control, and severity of both mental and physical effects created and now needing dealt with.

There are several things necessary in order to affect addiction recovery for a life time. One of these is a drug free withdrawal and full detoxification program. Substitute or maintenance drugs are not a viable long term option. Ask any heroin addict who is now using methadone in addition to heroin, or ask any meth addict who now finds themselves abusing anti-depressants on a regular basis. Using additional drugs does not handle the barriers to continued drug use, but only adds to them.
