Drug Substance Abuse
We can’t help but wonder what causes one person to become in drug or substance
abuse while another person can walk away from it. Drugs or alcohol are use in an effort to handle a problem or physical/emotional pain of some sort.
The drug is found to offer short term relief to the problem or pain.
What happens in many cases is the individual continues to use drugs and alcohol to mask the symptoms and obtain relief rather than handle the actual source of the problem or pain.
Most drugs used have a tolerance factor where it takes more and more of the drug more and more often to achieve the desired results.
This leads to abusive and addictive use which adds additional problems and pains and yet at this point the person thinks there is no other solution or relief available. Thus the person enters the downward spiral of
abuse drug and
substance abuse and addiction.
Drug Rehab Information By State
MDMA or "ecstasy" is a Schedule I synthetic, psychoactive drug possessing stimulant and hallucinogenic properties. MDMA possesses chemical variations of the stimulant amphetamine or methamphetamine and a hallucinogen, most often mescaline. MDMA can cause adverse effects including nausea, hallucinations, chills, sweating, increases in body temperature, tremors, involuntary teeth clenching, muscle cramping, and blurred vision. MDMA users also report after-effects of anxiety, paranoia, and depression. An MDMA overdose is characterized by high blood pressure, faintness, panic attacks, and, in more severe cases, loss of consciousness, seizures, and a drastic rise in body temperature. MDMA overdoses can be fatal, as they may result in heart failure or extreme heat stroke.
Executive Director of Narconon Arrowhead Gary W. Smith reports, ‘Although the number of people coming to us who are abusing pot is a smaller percentage of our total clientele, in the 30 years I have been in the drug
rehabilitation field I have not seen these numbers of individuals literally hooked on marijuana and unable to stop on their own.
We’ve known for a long time that marijuana use can lead to other drugs but it is shocking to see people whose lives are being destroyed by smoking pot just like others we are treating who are addicted to crack or alcohol.
I believe this is happening because the strength of the pot that is being smoked today is probably ten times stronger than the pot of 20 years ago.’
Heroin is a highly addictive illegal drug. During the 1800’s opium
addiction was a major problem in the U.S.
Morphine was developed as supposedly a non-addictive substitute for opium but proved to be even more addictive.
The same is true of Heroin which was a supposedly non addictive replacement for morphine, but again is actually more addictive than opium or morphine.
In more modern times we know have methadone as a supposed ‘solution’ to heroin addiction.
Methadone is even more addictive than heroin. If withdrawal from heroin can be gruesome and harrowing, then methadone is even worse and can be life- threatening if unsupervised.
Rehab involves returning to a previous condition and preferably an improvement of even that. Recovery involves the gaining back of things lost.
Truly effective
addiction treatment will address both of these factors.
Rehabilitation would involve ceasing drug and alcohol use altogether and effecting a complete
detoxification of the system of store drugs and chemicals in the fatty tissues of the body.
Cravings, guilt and depression would then be fully addressed as these are the causes of continued
drug use or relapse. Recovery will also involve gaining the needed life skills and abilities to begin repairing the damage to self and others that has been created as well as tools to move forward towards ones actual hopes and dreams with a new drug free productive life.
